What does it mean to have senioritis? This imaginary disease is defined by Webster Dictionary as a lack of motivation and effort by school seniors as evidenced by tardiness, absences, and lower grades. Teachers and students have different perspectives of this so called virus. Teachers define senioritis as an infectious virus that impedes success of the student; however, seniors view senioritis as a right of passage that they have earned. As a teacher, this supposed infectious agent can be detrimental to the average senior. Their grades and dreams drop. The laziness and loss of motivation that comes along with senioritis hinders the student to become successful. It’s like running a marathon and stopping a mile out from the finish. These students are almost there but not quite. They still have to go all the way to get the degree, and that goes for college as well. I am in this field of work to help the young students of this world become successful young adults. Being a teacher means the world to me, and becoming eminent in this society should mean even more to these students. Success doesn’t come easily; diligence, loyalty, and hard work are needed. Becoming a senior has to be the best year of my life. I'm graduating soon, so that means I don't have to deal with homework, small town drama, or my mom for a while. I’m tired all the time, lazy, and I’d really just like this year to be over. I’m ready for summer! Teachers say college isn't easy, but I know I'm ready. I have earned the right to not do my homework anymore. Studying for tests? Pfft, yeah right! That's all I'll be doing next year, it's time to take a break, boys. Senior year is all about chilling out and scaring the freshmen. Sports, fun, and no work is what this year is all about. I'm going to kick off my shoes and enjoy the ride. Senioritis spreads from student to student like a plague, teachers try to stop it, but students embrace it. Senioritis can be explained as a decline in motivation and performance, yet it isn’t a real affliction. Students make up this supposed disease because they don’t see the value of their last year in high school or college. All four years of hard work goes to waste when a student doesn’t see the big picture. Instead of focusing on the seconds he or she has left in class, try to see how important a senior year is.
